Adbhar is a historically important town in Chhattisgarh state of India. The place belongs to Jangir – Champa district. Even though it is not much developed town, there are some famous temples that attract visitors to here.

History of Adbhar

The historical town of Adbhar was earlier known is Ashtadwar. British Library has preserved thirteen photos of this ancient town. Ancient copper plate of 7th centuries has been discovered from Adbhar. It was by Nanna Raja, a historical king from capital of Sirpur. The ancient and famous temple called Ashtabhuji temple is also situated in this town. David Pingree, an American mathematician has collected four books of exact sciences in Sanskrit from this town. The intellectual and social role of Adbhar since ancient period is indicated in these books. Besides, many remains of Jain and Buddhist cultures, several Shiva lingas, remainsof moat of ancient kings and a lake with endangered species of giant sized leatherback freshwater turtle and numbers of lakes and ponds etc are also found at this town.

Adbhar town has a population of 7,272 with 3,572 males and 3,700 females. 12.3% of the total population is children below six years old. 24.71% are schedule caste and 11.01% are schedule tribe here. The average literacy of the town is 73.74% and it is higher than the state average of 70.28%. The male literacy rate is 82.31% and the female literacy rate is 65.46%.

Adbhar is a historically important city. This ancient town has many historical monuments and remains. The most famous tourist attraction here is Adbhar Ashtabhuji Temple, which is one of the most revered religious sites of Chhattisgarh. One of the significant pilgrim sites, Asbhar Ashtabhuji temple imparts an aesthetic appeal to the entire region. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Devi, who is velieved to have eight hands. Besides a famous pilgrim location, the temple is also famous for its splendid architecture.Navratri periods are the special festive occasions here and the goddess will be decorated with ornaments on these days. Large number of people visits here from various corners of the country. The serene and clam atmosphere here give a relief to the people from the stress and strains of hustle bustle life of the cities.

Railway is the most common transport option in Adbhar. The town is at a distance of 10 km south-east from Sakti railway station and 10 km south west from Kharsiya railway station. Both are in Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line. Pindra Road railway station, Pendra Road railway station, Harri railway station, Sarbahara railway station and Khodri railway station are also near to the place. As Adbhar is also 10 km away from National Highway 200 at Sakti, roadways can also be depended on to reach here. Government and private owned buses are available for road transportation. Auto and taxis are also available for more comfortable journey. Raipur airport, which is situated at a 200 km distance, is the nearest airport to the town. Bilaspur Airport (90.3 km), Raigarh Airport (176. 5 km) and OP Jindal Airport (176. 5 km) are also other nearby airports to Adbhar.

As Adbhar is a gradually developing town the service type business like courier, catering, packers and movers, mobile phone repairing, hostels, event management services and studios etc. are very minimal here.Only a few banks have branches here. Even though there are a few pilgrim spots or historical monuments in the Adbhar, the town is not yet developed as a popular tourist place. It is difficult to find out good restaurants and hotels here. The basic facilities like hospitals, nursing homes, ambulance services etc are also very minimal here. People in Adbhar are also not much fashionable as in metropolitan cities. There are not much advanced gym and fitness centers or beauty parlors here. In short, there is a long way for Adbhar to reach to a developed city.
